
Day 1. Arrival
Arrival at Sofia Airport. You will be welcomed by a professional tour guide.
Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Sofia.
Day 2. Sofia sightseeing, Stara Zagora
Sightseeing tour of Sofia - see the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, the Church
of St. Sofia, the Russian Church of St. Nicolas, the 4th century Rotunda of St.
George and a part of the remainders of the old Roman settlement. A visit to the
valuable icon exhibition in the crypt of the Cathedral. Lunch in Sofia and
continue to the town of Stara Zagora. Overnight in the SPA resort of Stara
Zagora.
In the evening: concert/opera as per Festival/ Opera Programme 2008
Day 3. Option 1: Perperikon, Tatoul, natural phenomena ‘Stone wedding’ & ‘Stone
mushrooms’
A day in the eastern part of the Rhodope Mountains - in the vicinity of the town
of Kurdjali. A visit to the cult complex Tatoul (legend has it that Orpheus was
born here), to the rock pyramids near Kurdjali called ‘Stone wedding’, the
Thracian temple of Perperikon (sanctuary of Dionyseus) and the natural
phenomenon ‘Stone mushrooms’. Lunch. Return to Stara Zagora and time at leisure
in the downtown. Overnight in the SPA resort of Stara Zagora.
In the evening: concert/opera as per Festival/ Opera Programme 2008 or Folk
Style Evening
Day 3. Option 2: Thracian Culture in the Valley of the roses
A journey to the Valley of the Roses and its main city - Kazanluk. See the
Thracian Tomb (UNESCO heritage), the newly discovered Tomb ‘Golyama Kosmatka’
and the Memorial Church in the town of Shipka. A visit to the Ethnographic
Complex in Kazanluk. Lunch. Return to Stara Zagora. Overnight in the SPA resort
of Stara Zagora
In the evening: concert/opera as per Festival/ Opera Programme 2008 or Folk
Style Evening
Day 4. Plovdiv, Batschkovo Monastery
After breakfast departure to the second largest city in Bulgaria – Plovdiv.
Enjoy the romantic atmosphere in Old Plovdiv, visit the Ethnographic museum, the
Church of St. Konstantine and Helena, and the impressive Roman Theater (2nd
century AC). Leave the city in the afternoon to visit the country’s second
largest monastery – Batschkovo, see the monastery’s church and refectory, known
for their splendid frscoes. Overnight in Plovdiv
In the evening: concert/opera as per Festival Programme/ Opera 2008 or dinner in
a traditional restaurant in Old Plovdiv
Day 5. Departure
Transfer to Sofia airport.
The tour programme can be redisigned in accordance to flight schedule.
* An unofficial meeting could be orginised with the director of the Stara Zagora
State Opera - Mr Vesselin Stoykov in case he is available
